Are Vasant Panchami and Holi the same festival?

In most of India they are two separate days about forty days apart. In Braj they are the two ends of one long festival. Braj treats Vasant Panchami as the opening of Holi. The pole is raised, the first gulal is offered, and the samaj gayan begins that day and carries on until the Phalguna full moon, which is Holi everywhere else.

When is Vasant Panchami in 2027?

Thursday 11 February 2027, on Magha shukla panchami, the fifth lunar day of the waxing moon in the month of Magha. Both reckonings agree that year. In 2028 they do not. Panchami begins two minutes after sunrise on 31 January, so most households keep Monday 31 January while ISKCON and the Gaudiya temples keep Tuesday 1 February.

Why is yellow worn on Vasant Panchami?

Because the fields are yellow. Mustard blooms across north India in Magha, and the day takes its colour from the landscape it arrives with. For Braj there is a second reason. Yellow is Krishna's colour, the shade of the pitambar he wears, so a day in basanti yellow is a day dressed as he is.

What happens in Braj on Vasant Panchami?

The Holi danda, a decorated pole, is raised at Barsana and Nandgaon, and it stays up through the whole season. Temples dress their deities in yellow and offer yellow sweets. At Banke Bihari in Vrindavan the first gulal of the year is offered to the deity, and the samaj gayan, the antiphonal Braj singing that carries Holi, begins that day.

How is Vasant Panchami connected to Saraswati?

It is her day across most of India. Students and musicians place books and instruments before her, and children are often given their first letters on this morning. The two observances sit together without conflict. The day is about new beginnings, and in Braj the beginning that is being marked is Holi.

How is Vasant Panchami kept at home?

Wear yellow, and cook yellow: kesari bhaat, meethe chawal, boondi laddu, and saffron in whatever is offered. Yellow flowers on the altar. If you keep Radha Krishna at home, dress them in yellow, and if you plan to keep Braj's Holi season, this is the morning to offer the first pinch of gulal at their feet.

Somewhere in Magha the fields turn yellow, and Braj takes it as a signal.

Vasant Panchami is the fifth day of the bright fortnight of Magha, kept across India as the first day of spring and as the day of Saraswati. In Braj it is read more narrowly and more happily than that. It is the day Holi starts, and the singing that begins this morning does not stop for about forty days.

Magha shukla panchami. The date moves each year with the tithi and usually lands between late January and late February.

2028 splits, and by about two minutes. Panchami begins at 7:14 AM on 31 January, just after sunrise in Delhi. That is enough to fail the udaya tithi test, which asks whether the tithi is running at sunrise, so the Vaishnava calendar moves to 1 February. The general reckoning asks instead whether panchami prevails at madhyahna, midday, which it does on 31 January, so most households keep the Monday. Both are right under their own rule. If you are in Braj, keep the day your temple keeps.

Why Braj begins Holi today

Because the season is not a day here, it is a stretch, and it has to be opened.

On Vasant Panchami the Holi danda goes up: a decorated pole planted at Barsana and at Nandgaon, which stands through the whole season and comes down only at the end. The temples dress their deities in basanti yellow. And the samaj gayan, the antiphonal singing in which two groups answer each other verse for verse, begins and carries every day of Holi that follows.

At Banke Bihari in Vrindavan the first gulal of the year is offered to the deity on this morning. That is the moment the colour is considered to have started. Everything from here to Lathmar Holi at Barsana and on to the full moon night is one continuous festival, not a run of separate ones.

So when Braj says Holi is forty days, this is day one.

Why the day is yellow

Two reasons, and they agree with each other.

The first is the ground. Mustard blooms across north India in Magha, and for a few weeks the fields between Delhi and Mathura are a flat sheet of yellow. The festival takes its colour from the country it arrives in.

The second is Krishna. Yellow is his colour, the shade of the pitambar, the yellow silk he is always shown wearing. To put on basanti on this morning is to dress the way he does at the start of his own season.

So the day is yellow all the way through: yellow cloth, yellow flowers, and yellow food. Kesari bhaat, meethe chawal, boondi laddu, saffron and turmeric in whatever is cooked and offered.

Kirti Mandir on this day

Barsana holds one more thing on Vasant Panchami that belongs to this site's own lineage.

Kirti Mandir, the temple at Barsana dedicated to Kirti Maiya, Radha's mother, with Radha enshrined as a child in her lap, keeps Vasant Panchami as one of its festival days. It was founded by Jagadguru Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj and is the only temple of its kind anywhere.

There is a fitness to it. The day Braj begins its Holi is kept, in that temple, by a mother and a daughter, at the start of the season that ends with the whole of Braj in colour.

Saraswati and spring

Across most of India this is Saraswati Puja. Books, pens and instruments are placed before her, students ask for her blessing on the year's study, and small children are often given their first letters on this morning, a ceremony called vidyarambham or hate khori.

The two readings of the day sit together without any strain. Vasant Panchami is about something starting: the season, the study, the singing. Braj simply names a different beginning.

Keeping it at home

Wear yellow. Cook something yellow and offer it. Put yellow flowers on the altar and dress Radha Krishna in yellow if you keep them at home.

If you want to keep Braj's Holi rather than only the two days at the end of it, this is the morning to begin: offer the first pinch of gulal at their feet, and let it sit there. Some households then add a little colour to the altar each week until the full moon.

And if there is a child in the house who is about to start school, or an instrument nobody has picked up in a year, this is the traditional morning for both.
